Experience the new beginning
The Sinhala Tamil New Year, often referred to as Aluth Avurudda, is an immensely important and widely embraced cultural festival. It serves as the culmination of the harvest season and the commencement of a fresh astrological year. Notably, this festival is cherished and celebrated by both the Sinhalese and Tamil communities, the two largest ethnic groups in Sri Lanka.
The celebration encompasses a diverse array of customs and activities, from the vibrant spectacle of soaring kites to the captivating performances of traditional dances and music. Amongst the various traditions that have been passed down, the lighting of the hearth holds special significance. It brings families and communities together in a whirlwind of festivities.
From sprucing up homes with colorful decorations to crafting mouthwatering traditional dishes and sweets, the spirit of togetherness fills the air. As the anticipation builds, exchanging heartfelt gifts and warm greetings with loved ones adds a special touch to this season.
This festival occurs annually in Sri Lanka, typically in mid-April
The climax of this remarkable celebration arrives as the sun moves into the astrological house of Aries. It’s a moment of spiritual significance, known as the Punya Kalaya. Here, you’ll find a blend of religious and cultural activities.
It’s a time when positivity and hope reign supreme, making the Sinhalese and Tamil New Year an unforgettable experience in the heart of Sri Lanka.
